How to make a basement

So I was playing around last night on the sims 3 trying to make a basement. It's pretty similar to the way you do it in sims 2, but I kept having the ground lower than the stairs. Finally I figured it out. Here how to do it:

1 - Make a hole in the terrain with the largest selector available. Press the left mouse button 12 times (this is the magical number), and keep the selector in the same place. You can then use the terrain tool to add a bigger hole that keeps the same depth.

2 - Select the foundation tool. From the top corner of the hole, drag the foundation down and across the terrain. Make sure you do not make the terrain one block thick - it will do this for you.

3 - Do this to all four sides of the hole and you should have what looks like a basement.

4 - Add stairs to the ground level. This is the way that Sims can enter the basement from inside the house.

5 - Add walls and a floor above the basement, to give a basement effect.

 6 - Finally, decorate and furnish the room to your style.

The next thing I will try to figure out tonight is a way (dunno if it's possible even yet) to have underground parking in the basement. Not sure if the car would drive into it if I had a gentle slope going down to the basement into a garage door.

Have to try it. I'll let you know if it works tomorrow.

It seems to me the cars don't even need access to the road, only a parking space. I had a parking area that is walled in, and they still got into their car and drove off..

is there a way to make multistory basements?

i indeed know you can just make a ring of foundations to make a single underground floor, walled foundation, but i dont know how i could get multifloor's, i tried using the stairs to measure out exact floors (4 segs) though it wont work if you want more than one level underground, though you could just make a tall house in a deep pit, though it wont have nice looking foundations ofc.

also, the underground garage is indeed a very good idea, even though it wont drive it inside, its still fun to have a carport under the house, just as the "swimmingpool in the basement" classic.

I don't think it is possible to make multi-story basements, but I might try and give it a go, if there is a way, I'll figure it out. And yes - I have a swimming pool in my basement

I 've tried messing around with multi-story basements but once you get to the second floor that pesky angle on the edge of the terrain increases too much on the ground floor level, leaving a gap too large to cover. Still gonna try some more tricks, will let you know if I work something out.
